Why You Need an Exit Strategy for Your Business

Why You Need an Exit Strategy for Your Business - even a consultant needs a strategy!

Why You Need an Exit Strategy for Your Business

What are your long-term and short-term goals for your business? Veteran entrepreneur Celeste Hilling, CEO and founder of 10-year-old lifestyle company Skin Authority, stumped me with this question a few weeks ago, but she definitely left me with something to think about. When I started Deborah Mitchell Media Associates a few years ago, I was primarily concerned about getting it up and running, but Hilling explained that an exit strategy should be a part of every business plan. "At the start of your venture, have a plan for how you want to exit or transition from the business. This will help you be clear in your focus, share a clear vision for your staff and navigate times when you are confused," Hilling says. "You can use the end game as...Read More

Canadian Businesses: 5 Reasons You Should Care...

I know…..you don’t want to care. “It’s just so much work, and so time consuming, and what is it really going to do for me anyways? I get my wife/husband/uncle/son/niece (fill in any untrained relative in this space) because my time is better spent on selling my products and servicing my clients. “ “Why should I pay someone to do my bookkeeping, it’s so easy, anyone can do it” I hear those statements all of the time. Not just once in a while, but ALL of the time. Over and over again, that sometimes I get tired of hearing myself saying the same thing. So in a quick list, here are 8 Reasons why you should care:The Stats Don’t Lie. 25% of the 1,000,000 businesses that are started in North America fail within the first year. 80% have...Read More

We can turn on the multicurrency feature in Company Settings. But, how do we use it? Let’s say we have a customer that deals in Euros. They have a building in the U.S., but the main office is in a European country. When Rock Castle Construction does some remodel work for them, the payment will come from the main office, in Euros. First, we need a bank account for the foreign currency. You can see in the above graphic that now, with multicurrency turned on, there is an additional selection in account setup. Many value pricing evangelists tell you that you need to trash timesheets. I disagree. My firm does value pricing and we still keep timesheets. 6 Signs That You Have A Great Boss '

Do you have a great boss? I don’t mean one who just buys you a latte in the morning. I mean a boss who truly delivers the environment, guidance and support YOU need to excel in your job. Here’s how to find out. As Jim Collins said in his seminal book Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t, ‘Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice, and discipline’, and this is never more true when applied to being a manager. Sadly, I’ve met a number of managers in my career that think their greatness is a matter of having ‘Manager’ or ‘Head of’ in their job title. These chumps have throw their weight around without, seemingly, making good decisions or...Read More

How to Ensure Better Cloud Accounting Security

Businesses of all kinds are storing content and data and accessing software applications via the global network of computer servers known as the cloud. IT analyst Gartner recently predicted that the total value of cloud-based systems would reach $210 billion a year by 2016. But just how safe is it to post your financial data to a server that is owned, maintained, and secured by someone else, somewhere else? Well, most of us are happily conducting day-to-day banking over the internet so does security matter to most organizations? Apparently yes. Many studies, such as this one from online accounting technology consultancy Software Advice, have indicated that security is rated as a top concern to companies working or planning to work with...Read More

The Benefits of Cloud Computing

More and more people every day believe that cloud computing is the future. It is certainly the belief in the field of bookkeeping and accounting, as all the major players such as Intuit (QuickBooks) and Sage are moving their products to the cloud as fast as they can. A big factor in the reason for this belief? Mobile computing and its rise in importance for people’s business, and for that matter, personal lives. Based on the latest figures from the United Nations, 40% of the world’s population are using the Internet. And that social media giant Facebook has 1.35 billion active monthly users, which is quite startling when you consider the site has only been around for ten years. One of a company owner’s most important accounting goals is to track the profitability of the business. Is profit growing? Or, decreasing? Is the amount of profit worth the investment of time and money the owner puts into his/her business? These are critical questions. Who wants to waste their time in a business enterprise that barely squeaks by and may never improve. We always search for better ways to try and see what’s going on in the business. What’s working? What’s not? One of the ways we try to do that is to break the business down into ever smaller chunks that are easier to examine. So contractors start to look and the profitability of each job. Canada - Is HST Charged on Every Product I Sell?

HomeSmart Business Matters BlogIs HST Charged on Every Product I Sell? Is HST Charged on Every Product I Sell? This is another bookkeeping and accounting question that we’d like to use this blog to address. The simple answer is no. The government has decided to allow “point of sale” rebates on certain products or services. What this means, is that on some items you can provide your customer with a rebate on the provincial portion of the HST and only charge them 5%. Some of these categories include children’s clothing and footwear, car seats, books, diapers and feminine products. So, don’t assume that everything will have HST applied. Multicurrency Feature Now Included in...

I truly believe in Intuit’s® focus on offering the global small business ecosystem. As a multicurrency freak, I figured that having a multicurrency feature in QuickBooks® Online in the US would be a slam dunk. It’s already a QBO feature in other regions, such as Canada and the UK, but, for some reason, it hadn’t made it into the QBO US. That is, until now. I am delighted to report that, starting in June of 2015, QuickBooks Online Essentials and Plus subscribers in the US can now access multicurrency functionality. I’ve been waiting for some time, but it was worth the wait. Let me describe how multicurrency is enabled in QBO, and how to use it. When a QBO company is created, by default, multicurrency is not enabled, similar to the QBO you...Read More

One Gal's Opinion on "Implementing Value...

First, let’s be honest here. Implementing Value Pricing is a tough read. But it’s well worth your time. Ronald Baker of Verasage, the author, indicated that it’s not a “beach read.” This is true. So are you up for the challenge? I promise you, it will pay off. The million-dollar question is: What is value pricing? Here’s my answer, subject to many interpretations that many in the know already have. Value pricing is assessing your client’s needs in an attentive manner, providing options to their needs, and aligning a value for that exchange before work is commenced. Many of my colleagues have contested that this is basically a way of ripping off a client. But value pricing is formulated to present options to the client ahead of the work...Read More

Do you have a data backup strategy? - Part 2

When will I stop posting about backing up data? When people start doing it!

Do you have a data backup strategy? - Part 2

My previous post began the conversation of why you needed a data backup strategy. 60% of companies that lose their data will shut down within 6 months of the disaster. Once you have your backup procedures in place, should you rely completely on your backup software? I wouldn’t recommend it. Backup software shouldn’t be relied upon to get it right all the time. To really be sure your backups are doing their job, periodically test the backups by attempting to restore them to another location. This will bring out any flaws or corrupted data before it’s too late. Also, most backup applications have a backup log or create a backup report that can quickly identify any problems or skipped files in the backup procedure. Just be sure to review...Read More

Reimbursements as Income in QuickBooks Online

QuickBooks Training & QuickBooks Consulting. Best rated in Miami & Broward By Hector Garcia On July 21, 2015 · A significant feature in QuickBooks Online (QBO) is the ability to track expenses for a customer so they can be easily invoiced to that customer. There are a couple of ways to handle the accounting. QBO has several settings that allow you, the QBO user, flexibility in the way you would like to handle these transactions in your QuickBooks file. Let’s say you incur travel expenses on behalf of a customer and intend to invoice that customer for those expenses. Who Is Supervising Your Bookkeeper?

I got to thinking about job supervision recently and how important it is in any field. When you think about it, most jobs have people supervising them. The professions, skilled trades, and unskilled trades have someone watching or supervising others: someone to make us accountable, to check our work, to keep us on track. At AIS Solutions all of our bookkeeping work is supervised. I think it helps both myself and our clients sleep better at night. However, from my personal experience in the accounting field supervision sometimes isn’t the case or it’s not done as well as it should be. Accountants and bookkeepers perform different functions.
