How To Squeeze a Dollar Out of 13 Percents...

There is often confusion around HST. Many small business owners don’t know when they should register for it, what method they should use or when to file. In this blog post I will attempt to provide some clarity on this topic. Let’s start with some basics. GST/HST or Harmonized Sales Tax is the harmonization of Provincial Sales Tax (PST) and Goods and Services Tax (GST). In Ontario the harmonized rate is 13%. This is the tax that is applied to most goods and services that you purchase in Ontario. The exception to this is zero-rated and exempt supplies. I won’t explain this in detail now but will post a more in-depth explanation in a future blog. In addition to paying HST on goods and services, you are also required to collect HST once...Read More

8 Questions Business Owners Should Ask Alternative LendersAt some point, most small business owners will need additional cash flow for their businesses, whether it’s for building expansions, covering seasonal payrolls or simply purchasing new pieces of equipment. The first step for many business owners is often seeking a traditional loan from a bank or credit union; however, there are many cases when even a successful, growing business has trouble getting funding in a traditional manner. In this case, the next step would involve seeking alternative sources of funding. Hundreds of “non-traditional” lenders have sprouted up in the last five to seven years to fill this market need, creating more options than ever before. As this is a...Read More

The Unsung Heroes of the On-Demand Economy

Self-employed vs. entrepreneurs - are they really that different?

The Unsung Heroes of the On-Demand Economy

We need to rethink the notion of entrepreneurship in the on-demand economy and build the tools and infrastructure to support the growing self-employed workforce. There is no shortage of discussion these days about the rise of innovative service marketplaces — like Uber and TaskRabbit. Much of the attention has focused on the benefits to customers and the wave of disruption to established industries and business models. Amidst all this talk, though, what has gone less noticed are the actual people driving this new on-demand economy. These are individuals who, when faced with the choice of deciding who’d be in charge of their livelihood, opted to own it. And in so doing, are having a transformative effect on the very definition of...Read More

Five tough choices you'll face as an entrepreneur

One of the most appealing benefits of becoming an entrepreneur is gaining control over your professional life. As an entrepreneur, you are singularly responsible for making all decisions about the business, and while others might be able to give you advice and point you in a certain direction, ultimately you have the final say. Unfortunately, there’s a major downside to this benefit. Being responsible for so many decisions is stressful, especially when those decisions can determine the eventual success or failure of your business. Some decisions will come to you naturally, but there are five incredibly hard decisions you’ll inevitably have to face as an entrepreneur: 1. Quitting your job. Deciding to start your business is always the...Read More

The Most Helpful Money Metrics to Monitor The...

When most entrepreneurs want to know how they’re doing financially, they look at their bank balance and see what’s there. Bank balance accounting – although wildly popular – is a lousy method for accurately assessing the health of a business. Here are eight better ways to monitor how your company, or any company, is doing. 1. Current ratio = Current assets/Current liabilities. While lots of folks get themselves needlessly worked up over five years’ worth of financial projections, an incredibly useful metric can be a company’s immediate ability to pay its bills. If you divide current assets by current liabilities, you get the current ratio – a measure of a company’s liquidity. If a business has little-to-no liquid value, that can be a red...Read More
